Ordinary Blessings: Prayers, Poems, and Meditations for Everyday Life

I hate it when I can’t remember how a book fell into my hands, but I LOVE the feeling of holding it to my heart and thinking … “I’ve found you!” Perfectly appealing normal person -- wife, mother, pastor, daughter, neighbor -- Meta shares in her forward: “I recently shared with my son that I’ve never had an eight year-old before, and I’m learning as I go. He responded in a deadpan tone, ‘I think that’s pretty obvious, mom.” And so, we love Meta, our new guide AND her luminous, lovely, short prayers and poems, and spot-on meditations for our ordinary lives. No treacle here, or watercolor illustrations - just a fresh, contemporary faith-full take on authentic everyday life. I love that she writes about not just what you’d expect, like turning points and hard times and loving yourself and others (and actually living with both - good heavens). And of course she’s wise about nature too, and best friends. But most of all I love her sincere blessings for bare feet, “looking in the mirror”, wearing winter layers, saying “no,” and … daylight savings time! Plus sitting next to young children on a plane. What a blessing is Ordinary Blessings - for when you want to say “so happy, so sorry” to someone or just “I’ll know you’ll love this too, my friend.” Buy one, give 5 -- at least; I contacted the author in Minneapolis and she assures me we can get more if you want. - Sandy

The ordinary moments of life can be sacred, if we simply take a moment to notice. This collection of prayers, poems, and meditations offers a brief respite from the hectic, harried pace of our days. Open it when the spirit moves you or when the spirit feels distant--the words will be here to inspire, calm, and encourage you either way.

From gifted poet and empathetic pastor Meta Herrick Carlson, Ordinary Blessings collects blessings for loving yourself, enduring hard things, authenticity, living with others, and the rhythms of each day. Pause, take a deep breath, and open these pages to find that you've been standing on holy ground all along.
